Who Do You Want to Be?: Reinventing Yourself for You and the WORLD
Have you ever read something or heard someone speak and something they say ignites a little flame inside of you?
Years ago, I read Brene Brown’s amazing book Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead. While sometimes I feel like Brene Brown is always speaking directly to me, something she said really resonated with me, and I remember it a lot even years after reading the book.
She said, “Your level of belonging, in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance.”
Even the most seasoned of entrepreneurs can get stuck in this cycle of seeking belonging only to come up short. However, when was the last time we sought that belonging by looking first within? What Brene Brown is saying is that within is exactly the place we need to start the work. We need to find a sense of acceptance of ourselves before we can expect to find belonging with others. That’s some heavy stuff, I know. But it’s true - self-acceptance is vital.
If you’ve ever had experience with trying to reinvent yourself or leveling-up, you know it isn’t easy and definitely not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of courage and tenacity to be able to tune out the naysayers and take on the challenges.
One resource that will help you do just that is a good mentor. Business mentors are absolutely essential to the process of reinventing yourself. If you find yourself in need of a business mentor, look around you for someone to fulfill that role.
Who embodies either the personal traits or the business savvy that you admire and want to replicate? Who do you look at and think, “I could learn so much from this person”? Reach out to them and see if they could spare some time in connecting with you and helping you learn how to take on those challenges with the skills you admire in them.
I was personally very fortunate to have the lovely Brooke Castillo as my own mentor as I undertook the journey of reinventing this past Spring. If you want to hear about that process, you can listen to it here on my podcast.
So much of my work during that time revolved around me answering some big and small questions about what I wanted in my reinvention. I had to get clear on some things such as:
What type of business did I want to have?
Who was I going to serve?
What income level did I want to earn?
I even took a look at little things that make a big impact such as how the new me would dress and style her hair. When it comes to reinvention, not a stone should be left unturned.
Change is a natural part of life. We have been through countless cycles of evolution from the time we were born whether they were intentional or not. With every milestone, we embrace the change that comes with it whether it’s when we move, we change schools, we marry or divorce, and countless other ways we measure a life.
Change is also needed when it comes to your business. You don’t have to wait for a big milestone to launch the journey of reinventing yourself. You can start today by deciding to do it and taking the steps to make it happen.
Let me help you with your first step: Declare that you want to be a new version of yourself for both you and your business and muster all the courage you have to accept this new version. I would love it if you reached out and let me know how your experience in reinvention is going!
